A Nurture UK school

What is nurture?

Nurture is a tried and tested way of relating to children that helps them develop vital social skills, confidence and self-esteem, and become ready to learn.

The concept of nurture highlights the importance of social environments – who you are with and not who you are born to – and its significant influence on social and emotional skills, wellbeing and behaviour.

The nurturing approach to education offers a range of opportunities for children and young people to engage with missing early nurturing experiences, giving them the social and emotional skills to do well at school and with peers, and to develop their resilience and self-confidence. It encourages pupils to take pride in achieving - addressing the social and emotional needs that can hamper learning.

Our journey

The team at Woodpecker Hall Primary school are currently working towards becoming a Nurture UK accredited school, with Miss Monoghan, Miss Gold and Mr Diprima leading a 2-year project that began in December 2023.

The National Nurturing Schools Programme is a two-year journey for all schools aiming to support their pupils Based on the six principles of nurture that have successfully underpinned nurture groups for many years.

This programme enables schools to develop and embed a nurturing culture that enhances stakeholder engagement. The programme has been developed by Nurture UK, the world’s leading authority for nurture in education. There are six principles of nurture.

The Six Principles of Nurture

1. Our learning is understood developmentally

We can learn.

We appreciate that each child develops at their own pace. Our teaching strategies are tailored to meet the developmental stages of our children, ensuring that learning is meaningful and accessible to all.

2. Our classrooms offer a safe base

We feel safe.

Our classrooms are designed to be a safe place where children feel secure and supported. This stable environment allows them to explore, learn and grow with confidence.

3. Nurture is important for development of self-esteem

We feel cared for.

Nurturing relationships are key to emotional well-being. We prioritise creating positive connections between the children, teachers and all staff to promote a sense of belonging and happiness.

4. Language is a vital means of communication

We are listened to.

Effective communication is essential for learning and relationships. We emphasise the development of language skills to help children express themselves clearly and confidently.

5. We understand the importance of transition in our lives

We are supported.

Transitions can be challenging, whether they are between activities, year groups or life stages. We provide guidance and support to help children navigate these changes smoothly.

6. All behaviour is communication

We are understood.

We recognise that behaviour is a form of communication. By understanding and interpreting behaviours, we can provide appropriate support.
