A review of the book “Pollyanna” from a year 6 pupil

During this lockdown, we asked students to send us a review of a book they have enjoyed reading.

Yagmur has written a review on a classic children’s novel. The book is titled “Pollyanna” and was published in 1913 by American novelist Eleanor H. Porter.

Storyline: Pollyanna is a little girl. She helps people. She plays the glad game with her friends. Everybody loves Pollyanna.

What did you like about the book: Pollyanna has a very good heart and always tries to be happy.

How could the book be improved: Pollyanna's aunt might be more genial.

Yagmur has told us: “I love this book because this book tells people to be happy no matter what happens”.

Date: 04.05.2020

Well done Yagmur for reading the book and thank you for the great review.

Background: The book was so successful that author Eleanor Porter soon after wrote the sequel in 1915 titled “Pollyanna Grows Up”.

In addition, a further eleven sequels followed, known as the “Glad Books”.

A more recent sequel “Pollyanna Plays the Game by Colleen L. Reece, was published in 1997.

Due to the book's fame, "Pollyanna" has become a byword for someone who – like the title character – has an unfailingly optimistic outlook.
